Default [Pending] Drive letter assignment conundrum

After attack by...wait for it, "stoned angelina" and the departure of norton anti virus in cd form (never have kids) windows 98se was finally re-loaded (after about 14 attempts) to allow another antivirus program to remove the offending article. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, drive C: and d: have reassigned themselves to drive d: and c: respectively, very confusing. C: was the original computer hard drive and d: and e: and additional partitioned drive added to boost storage capacity.

Attempts to resolve this irritating occurrence have included the usual system device properties investigation, however although this shows the assigned drive name, reserve drive letter start/end are not active and so does not allow for re-assignment, also an attempt to re-assign in dos also failed "bad command".

Any suggestions on how to reverse this proble will be gratefully recieved.

Welcome to PC help forums

If the hard drives are "not active" yo will need to go into your computer management and set drives as active first. If you don't know how to do that let me knwo and I will walk you through it.

If you didnt get the vrus off the pc... You probly did not do a real Format.. If you still have the Windows 98 disc or boot disk, Download this Program and let it run.. It will erase everything on the drive(you will have to reinstall 98) but it will return the drive back to when it came to you when you first got it.

Just make sure you download either the Floppy Version(best) or ISO (have to burned to a cd)

virus anhilated after successful reload of win98se, didnt format the drives as i just needed windows to run to run the antivirus programme. It was after I finally got Windows to operate that I discovered the re-assignment. On 98, right click on my computer doesnt give management options as it does in xp. it just gives up the device manager option which i have already tried. the computer is an old one which the kids use and has pathetically small hard drives of 4gb and 40gb.

 Sorry forgot it was 98.. Will it let you reassign the drive letters?

Here is how to do it in 98..

Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click Disk Drives.
Double-click the listing for the drive that has been reassigned to drive D: (such as the Zip drive).
Click the Settings tab.
Change the Current Drive Letter Assignment to [K:] or another unused drive letter toward the middle or end of the alphabet.
Click OK and reboot when prompted.
Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click CDROM.
Double-click the listed CDROM drive.
Click on the Settings tab.
Change the Current Drive Letter Assignment to [D:].
Click OK and reboot when prompted.
Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click Disk Drives.
Double-click the listing for the drive you reassigned in step 5.
