i did change the hard drive. i put a hard drive with linux on to see if that changed anything but it didnt.
the monitor is very oldand i'll try the reseating

Put the Linux hard drive in there and see if you can boot up 98. This is pretty baffling. Unless when you changed motherboards and the Linux boot driver did somthing? i doubt it though. Hmm will look around for an answer

the 98 hard drive worked....
i think it is now less to do with hardware config but now more related to another post id did about it freezing. after it freezes for a couple of reboots it goes back to this...
we fixed the problem... but now we have another one
