Default [Pending] Mysterious Add New Hardware Wizard appearance with no desktop

:-( :-( Sad new person here with home PC probs. Prob one of thousands with ME issues! :-( :-(

Apparently for no reson PC comes on with no desktop but a Add New Hardware Wizard telling me windows has found the following hardware: but no name. Next for the automatic search to install software searches A drive for what is not there. Pressing Finish brings up a ENUM\HTREE\ROOT\ box saying SURegCreate key failed! Pressing OK merely removes the wizard leaving me with a blank b/w version of a screen without desktop.

Cntrl/Alt/Delete gives Cmdninst as well as Add Wizard and if removed leaves similar blank screen.

As background I should say that the PC was used for internet usage and had some beasties that were removed but when it is working it sticks regularly and Backweb agent appears far too often as apparent reason for this ?? So if I can get going again I'll need to sort that out!!

Are the two connected??

Hi superdee and welcome to PCHF

Quick question, do you have a re-install cd for Windows ME?

That's a shame because I think you may need to consider *at least* a repair-type install (i.e. re-installing ME over your existing installation). This is something that we can help with when the disk turns up. As you said in you correspondence to me, even safe-mode comes up with a blank desktop, this would indicate that a re-install would be appropriate.

Will scour the house for the disc - if it can't be found is it possible to load a completely new system (e.g.XP)?? Especially as millenium seems to be poor all round !! The missus thinks we never had a disc as it was pre-loaded and I don't remember ever seeing one.

Heh, you should be able to load XP, it depends on the "spec" of your PC. Can you please download and run this program: Belarc Advisor - then post the details of your system here, we will let you know how XP will perform on it.
