Default [Answered] Something Completely Wrong, Help Please!

My computer is a sony vaio computer from about 2000, and im running windows ME on it. In the beginning I haven't experienced very many problems with it but now I'm having a bunch. Around November, or December I upgraded it to Windows XP, for the purpose of my ipod so i could use itunes. It worked fine and i loved xp, until one day i had major problems with it where it turned on and went to that blue error screen and just shut off and kept restarting. [sorry, im not very good with computer terminology] so, i tried desperately and called sony and microsoft for help with my system and to try to get it to work again. well, after arguing and yelling and all that stuff, my computer worked again with the system restore disks. It was back to normal for a while until errors started occuring. Then I had this brilliant idea that maybe if i re-upgraded to windows xp, things would be okay again. the minute i pop in the update disk, theres a popup window that tells me that it is unable to upgrade because my cabinet files are corrupted. SO! my cabinet files are corrupted so i thought maybe redoing a system restore would do well again.. so i put in the two disks.. did another restore but now things have gotten even worse. i think i went overkill i know. well now, my computer starts up and my antivirus doesnt work and says its detection files are corrupted, and then a popup comes up that says that there is an error with explorer in i think its mshtl--something like that i dont catch it. it's one of those nifty messages that say, if this problem persists, try restarting your computer. so i do so.. and the same thing keeps happening. i'm at a loss right now at what to do. so if anyone could please help me i'd be so forever greatful . is that how to spell it? well i hope so! thanks for reading this anyways

Welcome to PCHF

Let's see if we can fix the individual problems before we look at more "drastic" solutions.

We need something to work with: please post the exact message you get when you were doing this
the minute i pop in the update disk, theres a popup window that tells me that it is unable to upgrade because my cabinet files are corrupted.
Also, the exact error message when this occurred:
then a popup comes up that says that there is an error with explorer in i think its mshtl--something like that i dont catch it. it's one of those nifty messages that say
Can you also post your exact make and model of PC/laptop.
This information you provide will help to resolve your problems quicker - thank you.

computer model: sony vaio slimtop lcd, PCV-LX800

anndd the error message is "Explorer has caused an error in MSLS31.DLL Explorer will now close If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer" and even though i do press close, it still keeps poping up, and im unable to acess the start menu or anything else, so the only place that i can click is that button.

msls31.dll is the library file used by Internet Explorer and Word applications to provide Unicode support.

You can try an Internet Explorer fix: Repair Internet Explorer

Not too sure if it will work, but try to run that repair IE install in safemode, also when you boot into safemode do the following:

Click on start, click on RUN then type MSCONFIG.

Check the startup tab and make sure there are no strange things loading, if you are unsure then take a sceenshot and post it on the site.

i couldnt even get past startup when windows just freezes with that error message. so i decided to try system restore again, and the computer is working fine, until i try to connect to the internet, when something else pops up. and error message saying "Msobe has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL. Msobe will now close.

I tried the internet explorer fix, but .. there is no internet explorer 6 on the add remove programs list. i am stuck. -.- i would be ohso thankful if someone could help me find out what the problem is and fix it
