Default [Answered] Explorer - Illegal Operation

Hi, I have some problems with my computer.

I was deleting some programs installed in my PC, but all of a sudden it hanged. After I restart my PC, it says configuration files couldn't be found and I'm asked to key in the product key of Windows 98, and reset my configuration settings. After I keyed in the product key, it didn't load into windows, it just stop there.

After I restart my PC again, it says Explorer - Illegal Operation. I end the task and it hanged there. Showing my desktop without my folders, taskbar, everything. I restart my PC n'th times but it's still stucked at the illegal operation thing, and hanged there.

What should I do? I have some important stuff in my PC and have not back them up. Is there any way to resolve this problem without formatting my PC?

Thanks in advance! =)

Why don't you just re-install Windows 98 over the top of the existing installation?

Grab a Win98 bootdisk (here is as good as anywhere else - www.bootdisk.com). Put your Windows 98 cd into the CD-Rom drive, place the floppy bootdisk into the floppy drive and re-boot.

This way you are not re-formatting your drive but merely rolling a new install of Win98 over the top, replacing any corrupt or missing files. If you get stuck just yell!

Yes, save the file from bootdisk.com and you will see that it is an .exe file. When you run this it will create a bootable floppy disk - so have one in the drive when you run the .exe file.
