Thanks for your help.
I have already tried disabling all other items in my Startup, besides what is necessary for Windows, numerous times..... No Luck !
As for reply to :
"Also try this
click Start / Run / type command and press enter. In the MS-DOS window type cd\ to get to C:\> then type "ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ch" and "ren config.sys config.ch". This will rename your autoexec.bat and config.sys and help make sure memory is being optimized through Windows."

I have a question: When I get to C:\> I type it exactly like this correct
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ch and hit enter ?
Then it will pop up C:\> again, and I type ren config.sys config.ch and hit enter again ?
Another C:\> will pop up, and I type exit. Correct ?
I did not see anything happen. Is there supposed to be some kind of reaction ? Not sure if I did this properly. I'll check my system, to see if it is possibly running correctly now, while I wait your reply.

Yes sounds like you have done it correctly, all it is doing is renaming your autoexec.bat to autoexec.ch
This means that when the computer starts it will no longer look for these files and just use the windows settings.

One way to check is to go to START --- RUN --- type COMMAND and press ENTER.
Then CD\ press enter
Then DIR press enter
This should show a list of all your files, look for autoexec and see if it has been renamed to .ch

Restart your computer and see if it makes any difference

I did what you said Zimbo, and under Autoexec it reads AUTOEXEC.NU4
My guess is that it had already been changed, so I could not change it from Autoexec.bat , and that what I did, did nothing.
Should I follow your previous instructions, and instead of using Autoexec.bat, use Autoexec.nu4 ?

This might be a better plan... When you are in the command mode, type CD\ then press enter.
Now type MD BACKUP press enter (this should create a directory called backup)
Now type MOVE autoexec.bat C:\BACKUP press enter (this should move autoexec.bat to the backup folder)

Now do the same for config.sys
MOVE config.sys C:\BACKUP press enter.

See if this works

I have a different situation now. I reinstalled Win98SE overtop of my previous Windows, and now, in the MS-DOS directory (from Start/Run/Command) there are two entries for autoexec
One is autoexec.nu4 (the one I had previous, before the reinstall)
The other is autoexec.bat (I have now, since the reinstall)
What should I do now ?

By the way, I did uninstall my Norton, and downloaded a free version of Avast Antivirus, which I setup after my reinstall of Windows. Since the reinstall, most things seem to be working better, and faster, but it seems like the same ole' problem is still there. So, I'm back to try to possibly find a way STILL to get a handle on it.

delete the autoexe.nu4 . The original autoexe.bat is there now, so if you delete autoexe.nu4 you shoudnt run into any problems.
