Default [Fixed] QT task problems

First time postee here - looking for some help please.

Used the computer as normal on Friday- closed it down without any problems. But yesterday morning when we switched it on it opened up in Safe Mode.

I got an error message

"QT Task caused a divide error in module Quicktime. QTS at 0167:00ab8e2c"

Without really understanding the implications I decided to uninstall Quick time. However when I restarted I still had the same error message. Then I had to go out to the football match (I am a big Sunderland fan) and I mentioned the problem to my friend at the match who said that I should not have uninstalled it and I should re-install it before I tried to sort out the problem. Unfortunately I cannot re-install it (a problem with updating the registry?).

Can anyone suggest what i should try next?

Thanks very much for your time and help with this.

Dave

Hi and welcome :-)

Ok, Windows is probably looking for a "startup" element that Quicktime had and as you have deleted QT it cannot find it. My suggestion is to go into msconfig ( guide here: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ ) > go to the "Startup" tab and un-tick any references to Quicktime, QT, QTtask etc.

Re-boot and when the box comes up, check the box to say "don't show again".

Thanks very much for the reply JDawg.

Some good news and some bad news.
I have tried as you suggested and took off the references to Quick time. I then re-started the computer. The time it come on without any error messages (the good news) but it is still operating Safe mode (the bad news).

I hate to take up more of your time - but do you have any further suggestions about what I could try next - or how I can find out what the fault is now?

Thanks again

Dave

Do you not even get the chance to choose "Start Windows normally" ?

Grab a Win98 bootdisk (from online - lots of places) boot the PC with the disk in the floppy drive. When you get to the Dos prompt type c: and press return.

At the C: prompt type scanreg /restore (notice the space between scanreg and the "/") - this will allow you to choose a previous copy of your registry - you will more than likely have a copy that pre-existed these QT issues you have had.

Come back if you need help or clarification.

Sorted!!!

It took me a little time to realise I should go into restart in Dos mode. But once I did that I followed your instructions - and it worked!!

Thanks to both Hengis and JDawg for your help - it is very much appreciated.

Dave
