Default [Fixed] - Windows 98 not starting up: Explorer.exe error

Hello,
I"m a first time user here.? Hope someone can offer suggestions, my desktop at home seems to have contracted a naughty virus.? I shut it down and now, trying to start it, it will come up to my desktop wall paper (no icons) screen and then freeze citing an error in the "explorer.exe" program.? Clicking "close" on the error message just freezes the system and the screen is just a big picture of my wallpaper, with no icons.? Is there anyway to get past this?? Would putting in a boot disk for it help get past??? I hope to save files/photos on the PC w/out wiping it clean if possible.? I have no idea what to try, any suggestions are greatly appreciated!? ?:oops Thanks,
John

I think the best way to get this fixed (and I don't think it's a virus) is to reload Windows 98 over the top of your existing installation. Get a Win98 bootdisk from here: www.bootdisk.com and whack your Win98 cd into the drive. Make sure when you get to the bit where it asks where u want Win98 to be installed, you tell it the same directory as you currently have it installed in.

I think this will replace the corrupted parts of your installation and return your PC to sweet harmony :-)

OK...I'm going to try that. I've already downloaded this to a laptop (but no A:!!!!) so I will have to make the disk later on! Thx again.

Have you tried booting into safemode, because normally on Windows 98 the virus is activated through the Startup menu and through the registry. Might be worth checking it out.

Hi Guys,
I'm gitten stumped here. I made a boot disk but when I start the computer with it in the A:, I get the message reading "Invalid system disk". I also tried booting in safemode....but get the same explorer.exe has generated errors etc. And yes, looks like they are in the registry. Any other ideas? I MUST be doing something wrong w/the boot disk if that isn't working.....thx,
John

Use this link: http://ephemeral-designs.com/downloads/boot98se.exe

Format a floppy disk by double clicking on > My Computer > right click on the A drive and select format > put a check in "Quick Format" > make sure your disk in "write enabled" and put it into the drive > select ok

When you have formatted the disk run the .exe file you have downloaded above.

Now re-boot and the disk should be fine.
