Default Checking DMA box causes lockup

I disabled the CD-ROM drive in the bios by changing the IDE port settings to Primary P-ATA+S-ATA instead of P-ATA ports only which it was at before. I loads fine without the CD-ROM drive, so I guess checking the DMA box on the cdrom is the problem. When I go to regedit in windows, and go into local machine and scsi, the "DMA currently used" is 00 for both the cdrom and the hard disk. Now i'm confused.
