Default explorer lockup

hope this is the right thread. i am currently running I explorer 6.0 with sp1. I haven't upgraded because i had a small full hard drive which i had recently replaced. if i wanted to install anything i would have to make room by deleting someting else. i read in another thread that you could skip sp2 and install sp3. problem i'm having is window lockup when i open a few links on the internet. everything else on the pc seems to operate just fine otherwise even my photoshop program. i have scanned for virus's with search and destroy which finds virus's every time it scans which makes me thing somethig has been missed and lets these return. I have downloaded runscanner but have not installed. thought i might need to upgrade to IE7.
I have tried firefox but wife is not to crazy about change. I could use some suggestion about where to start so i don't make things worse.
if you noticed my shoort log ons its because window locked up.

Hey Guys,

@ Willy, my personal welcome to PCHF. Let's start by addressing what may end up being an infected HardDrive. Can you please follow the instructions for PreWork in my signature, and post the resulting logs back here?

Also, have you done the necessary maintenance? Using a file cleaner, defragmenting the drive? Possibly using a good Registry Cleaner, that could significantly reduce your space problem. Also, after the Security Team has given you the green light, it may be worth looking at compressing the data on your HDD in order to free up some space.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW
