What does the kbps speed my ISP provides me mean?

Most Internet Service Providers give you an internet speed in kbps. kb is in this case standing for kilo
bits. But, this is not your download speed, because every browser shows you your download speed in kB/s. This means kilobytes.

You get e.g. an internet speed of 1024kbps. This does not mean you will download with 1024kB/s. Because your ISP expresses your speed in kbps, and you actually download with kB/s, we have to look at the proportion. There are 8 bits in 1 byte. This means that the speed in kbps will be 8 times the proper speed your browser provides you in kB/s.

The conclusion is that you have to divide the kbps speed by 8, and you will then get your download speed (in kB/s).

In the case of a 1024 kbps speed, this means 1024/8=128kB/s.
