Default Designing website as a graphic - any hints?

A couple of months ago I learned that many web designers lay out an entire web page in an image editing program first , then slice it up, insert in tables, etc.

My understanding of how to do this is quite limited but I am getting a few website jobs and think I really need to learn and get an handle on this. Can any one offer a few tips, hints or references?

Some of my initial questions would be:

- is there a standard size to make the overall graphic (pixel width and heigth)?

- do you insert individual slices as a foreground or background objects, or a combination of both?

- do you make rollovers right in the graphics program using layers?

- how do you add text? Do you allow for the text area (using white space) in the image, then slice it, delete it and add text in Normal view of FrontPage?

If there are other basic questions I should have asked but failed to do so, please address them if possible. thanks in advance for any tips,

gail

btw, I use Photoshop.

Torner, the best way to answer your questions would be to look at the source for the pages. If you are using Flash then you will build the graphics first then depending on the layout is how you divide your gaphics. My page designs are simple. Most are beginners code. I worked a bit in JAVA script and some flash which I never posted after The Realms of Peace went down.

The task you set yourself is not easy. You need to learn Flash, JAVA, DHTML, PHP, ASP, CSS among other things. Have I frightened you yet? Then don't be because if I can learn it so can most anyone. I'm afraid though that it would take writing a book to answer all of your questions. I have tons of web design reference books in E-format and there are lots of tutorials on the web. Let me give you a starting point and I'm sure others here more knowlegable than I, can and will help you as well.

Adobe PhotoShop is a great tool to use for making a full web page and then using the Slice tool. My friend does web design and does it this way. It looks amazing! I recommend doing it this way.

Here is a tutorial: Design a Website In Photoshop [Software Tutorials]

That's a great tutorial Axephilic. That with a little knowlege of HTML and Cascading Style Sheets for the text layout is just the ticket for Torner.

You dont realy need to do alot, to layout a webpage using graphics i recommend downloading some Free Website Templates.
Look at the way they are made, their source codes, their images, their flash animations etc..
How their placed & what makes them so good. After doing so, best way is to first try to make your own webpage template/layout and relate it (make it similar) to that template, then obviously slowly you'll gradually develop such a skill.

i agree with you on this one. I myself learned html and got a basic knowing of php css. All i would do is go to Free Clan Gaming Templates - ClanTemplates.com and upload them to my host and play around with them edit them and see how it was put togever and after month or so you get better now i want to learn what you want and im going to try the same thing

Good luck to you on web design
