Hello Alvin.

It depends on the traffic you will receive. Do you plan to make this a highly popular site, or would it be one that would only be visited by yourself and your friends? Is it vital to have the site online and available 24 hr a day?

It also depends on the budget you have allocated...dedicated hosting will likely cost more than shared hosting.

Ah yes, there are many free hosting services on the web that offer sub-domain hosting. This means that the website you create with them will be like the following:
xxxyyy.freewebs.com
Good for personal/small business sites, but not advisable for 'official' sites. As you mentioned, you want your own domain name.

I suppose you will only need shared hosting for the time being?

Try NextHost. Their basic plan gives 300GB space and 1TB bandwidth, which should be plenty for a starter hosting-type site. And, it's only $9/mo, less if you pre-pay for several months (or up to 4 years).

For a domain name, NEVER EVER EVER let a webhost register one for you. I use Namecheap.com. It's a little bit pricier, but the control panel is great and domains propagate fast.
