Default very. very slow startup...

hi all.

Now and again (i'd say its a 50/50 chance) vista will become unbelievably slow after i log into my account...It takes nearly 15 minutes for it to just DRAW the taskbar!. and no. its not even functional.

The quickest and best solution is to just forcably restart the p.c and just hope it boots up normally....

Ive not got many programs which start up with Vista. so i know they're not responsible. its Vista which is causing this.....i'll list the programs though;

Live Messenger.

PCProbe

AVG

Windows Sidebar

Windows Defender

ATI Catalyst Control Center

Creative Volume Panel

Picasa

Winamp

As you can see these applications should hardly have a huge impact on performance. specially on this rig. I'm also clean for viruses/spyware. and have been for a very, very long time (i'm also behind a router) AVG and Defender do full scans on a daily basis.

The pc in question is the one ive got listed under my name above. this type of behaviour is unacceptable on such a high-spec machine. darn you Vista!, darn you Micro$oft. Sort your priorities out!.

Thanks in advance..

Hey,

Quick question..do you use a combination of wireless and networked mapped drives?

Also, You can check to see what Vista reports as far as performance
startup/shutdown issues:

Control Panel -> System Maintenance -> Performance Information and Tools -> in the left pane, Advanced tools
cause of long startup/shutdown should be near the top under performance
issues.

Hehe. thanks for this. i had no idea Vista had these tools .

According to Vista. whats causing the slow startup is the AVG Resident Shield (avgrssvc.exe)

It also says that a Creativelabs application is causing slow shutdowns (which i also suffer from) the exe is "CTxfispi.exe" (time taken 570.6 seconds!) and another one is "Run Once Wrapper" (runonce.exe) by Microsoft.

Oh, and no. i dont use any wireless and/or networked mapped drives.

Thanks Hengis

Start by upgrading to the latest AVG build.

Get the free trial from TuneUp Utilities 2007
Install it - start TuneUp bypass the buy software and then click start up manager -
untick everything on the list except the ones you REALLY REALLY need then close TuneUp and restart your pc.
hope it helps

Wouldn't adjusting Msconfig do the same though?.
