ok here is what you need to do.
1st step: check for viruses: often viruses are loading and vista can be killed with a few simple viruses.
2nd step: when it takes that long to start hit ctrl alt delete and manually start explorer.exe- if this loads better that means that you probrably have a fake explorer.exe
-----------------------------------
3rd step: turn off aero, than turn off vista basic and go to original windows theme, do this by going to ctrl panel and than to personalization
4th step : update all your drivers
5th step: start control panel and than uninstall programs, than go to uninstall windows components, uninstall all the **** you dont need.
6th step: disable services you dont need by going to start, run, than typing services.msc.. dont be stupid, disable only waht you dont need, remember if its on automatic it starts at startup
7th step: disable the startup stuff on the start menu
8th step: msconfig- u already seemed to know that
9th step: use readyboost usb drive
10th step: simply get more ram
11th step: defragment your drive

Hope this helps.

Thanks for this.....

I discovered last night that all 4 of my ballistix RAM modules are faulty. perhaps its due to a heat issue. i'm not sure. but a Memtest on each module turns up hundreds of errors.

Not sure if this would cause this problem though. only BSOD's. (yes, ive been getting them. but not very frequent.)

Thankfully Crucial said they'd replace the modules for me......but due to the postal strike i think this may be some time away...
