Question Mouse Mystery

We have an HP Proliant 380 G5 which we are currently setting up for a customer. The trouble started when a coworker was trying to get a touch screen driver for some thin client machines that connect to the server with terminal services to work. I guess what happened was that he inadvertently installed the touch screen mouse driver onto the server, rather than the client.

What has resulted is something I’ve never seen before. The mouse, which is connected to the PS2 port, no longer works; nor will any other mouse plugged into any other port, USB or PS2. What is very strange is that even when no mice are connected to the server, and I uninstall all mice in device manager then do a scan for hardware changes, the same mouse devices, HID-compliant mouse and PS/2 mouse reappear in the list with the yellow exclamation. When I look at the properties it says “Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)”

I’ve tried booting into Safe Mode and uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse, but this doesn’t help.

I know this is not a hardware issue because I booted into a LiveCD of Kubuntu and the mouse worked just fine. I don’t know if this matters, but when I remote desktop into it, the mouse works fine as well.

Any ideas other than a complete reinstall?

Thanks,
Ryan

Some of my most difficult issues have been with USB drivers and the like-- It will take some time to track down answers...
