password protection for belkin router

hi peeps,

just bought a belkin f5d7231uk4 wireless router to connect to my home pc enabling wifi use of laptop and xbox 360. set it up fine and went through the wireless network configuration to put in a password. however when i connect my laptop it connects to the router immediately (without password request) and on inspection of the available networks it states mine is unprotected. how do i protect it??

the manual states that i should log in to the routers database by typing a number (similiar to an ip address) into my web browser, however this does not work. i have it connected as follows.....

virginmedia cable modem connected via ethernet to router modem port
pc connected via ethernet to my wireless router
pc connected via usb to my cable modem

the manual does state that the usb connection shouldn't be required however i can't get my pc to recognise the modem without it. could it be this thats the problem?

an idiots walkthrough would be very helpful.

Hello Terry,

1: Connect the PC and modem. Make sure modem is configured for Internet, (DONE)

2:Turn off modem, router, and PC. Connect PC to router via lan port then connect router to modem via Wan(modem) port. Turn on modem and let stablize, the router again let stablize. Now the PC.

note: connecting to the modem and router at the same time is causing a conflict. They are most likely using the same IP.

This should let your PC talk to the router..

hi lord.

tried what you suggested and still can't log on to the router interface. it's recognising my laptop and xbox 360 which both work perfectly. is there an idiots guide to password protect the network? seems i must be doing something wrong

btw: I forgot to mention you would need to reset your router to factory specs in the previous post...Whe you read these articles you will understand why you need something hard wired to the router..
