so i have 2 drives, a c and a d drive. forgive me for sounding stupid
but uh, i dont know what game servers are like i know they are 24.7 and thats what i want.
I just dont wanna have to pay for it, so can i turn my c drive (which i dont use) into a dedicated game server that just hosts a server 24.7. for my bhd (as long as my computer is on, or like can i get a program that lets the hosted server just run in the background? can i get a dedicated server without paying for it -_-

Theoretically you could.

But...

Could your computer and internet connection stand up to it, would your ISP approve etc? there are many things to consider.

You would also need a dedicated IP address (not common with most ISP's) - or you could set up a static IP address with sites such as NO-IP etc.

I speak from experience. If you don't have at least a dual core processor @ at least 1.5 GHz with at least 256 MB RAM, you will lag horribly and so will the server. I have hosted and run my own IRC and Game servers here at my house. You will probably have to restart your DSL modem at minimum 1 time per week. I did at least. Also, I recommend calling your ISP and asking if it is ok.

Good luck,
Adam

Ok...the short of it - ifyou want to run your own dedicated game server...you need a couple of things.

1) A connection that has at LEAST higher then 512kb upload...preferably 2mb upload
2) Server side software - such as the game server patches.
3) I'd suggest you need a second computer to host it on - if you were hosting a dedicated server, it would pull your day to day performance down.
4) Your ISP's permission - for which you will need a really good reason.
