Ok update incase anyone wants to know how i got on:
After i formatted the laptop...
It worked fine, i used my XP disk from my old pc and used the serial from the laptop to register it. No problems at all, i didn't even have to ring through microsoft.
I found all the drivers on acer website that i put on a cd and installed them all, again with no problems.
I did notice that the acer does infact have a hidden partition, which only appeared when i used the xp cd to wipe the HD. So i might buy the xp recovery cd for this laptop to make things easier for anyone else who may want to reinstall it at a later date.
Thank you for all the help guys, really appreciate the input and the help =)
