Have you tried windows update...?? What version of DirectX? should be at least 9.1-- having updated DirectX-- can be added safety for your PC-- it is a security risk (small but there)

Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime
Un/Reinstall your sound-card drivers if that does not work

Since you have onboard sound--you would need to get that through Shuttle's support-- there may even be upgrades you've missed (from them) that would solve this issue-- sometimes when you update Windows itself-- there are driver-compatiblity issues created. They fix those via updating the driver--as updated Windows is part of your security.

edit-- went looking for downloads for this system-- but I'm afraid the last update was 2003...-- got any empty PCI slots?
Might be simpler to get a sound-card.

here's the page-- but with that much time--I'm not promising much.

Barebone | XPC @ Shuttle ® - Product

PS-- looking at your HJT log-- are you running 2 antivirus programs? -- if so-- that in itself can cause issues. I saw AVG and Symantec(Norton) products running simultaneously.

They can actually interefere with each other--leaving you less protected.
If they were fighting with each other in the background you could also see system errors. They are designed to run out-of-sight... so you might not be aware.

I would choose which one you like best and uninstall the other.

ih8bills,

I appreciate the suggestions, but if you read my prior postings, I am already ahead of you on every point. I've reinstalled directx, reinstalled the latest drivers for the motherboard including the chipset, sound, and lan, reinstalled the video drivers for the Radeon 9600 (including rolling back to a prior working version), and upgraded the bios. What I have found so far is that movie files (avi/mpg/etc) run with no problem. PC games and sounds are what are dropping out. Since my processor problem is fixed, I am left assuming that I have some broken software someplace. I fear that a reload will be the only answer.

The logs show two anti-virus programs is because GaRHaR advised that I install AVG to run scans. After running the scans, I removed AVG as I was concerned with a possible conflict.

As for the sound card, the Shuttle has only one AGP and one PCI slot. The PCI slot is filled with the TV Capture card (since it is a HTPC).

Thanks for the help. I'll be sure to post back my results after the reload.
