Default unable to play movies.

Hi im new here and this is my first post,

Recently my pc was running really badly, so i decided to switch everything i need to my external hard drive and then do a full re install to get my nice new fresh pc again, all was fine and i have installed all the drivers i could think of which i need to continue. (graphics card, java, macromedia, directX, soundblaster and one or 2 others)

however since the reinstal i am unable to watch any movies, for example.

I click on the file i wish to watch and windows media player opens, however it does nothng and instantly sucks up 100% of my CPU sources, at this point it is almost impossible to close it down and then the screen starts to flash blash intermitently. Ultimately i have to reboot my pc by hitting the restart button.

I have wracked my brains trying to think what it could be, im not hugely computer literate, but i know how to mess about with a few things. I installed DivX as i thought it might of been a codec problem and i ran all the windows updates. I can only think im missing a driver at installation phase. but i am unsure what it is.

Any ideas? everything else on my pc works fine, but this one problem is starting to nag at me a little bit

im open to all suggestions.

Many thanks for reading

matt

ok i did a little more work, i can stream movies, through, myspace, youtube ect, but any which require windows media player to use caue my pc to freeze up. Streaming seems fine unless it uses a windows media player programme or even a real player programme. BBC SPORT uses alot of a real player and WMP's to stram their footage which will cause my pc to crash, however youtube seems to use their on programme.

this is so weird i cant seem to sort it out. any more thoughts?
