Post [Tutorial] How to reset your XP Password

Ok this tutorial will show you how to reset your XP password, should you forget it and cannot login to your user account.

First of all restart your computer and tap the F8 key on your keyboard untill you see "Advanced Options For Windows". Using the arrow keys on your keyboard scroll down and highlight "Safe Mode" and press "Enter" on your keyboard.

You will then see lines of text running down the screen, dont worry this is normal for Safe Mode, but when you boot to normal mode this is hidden by the XP Logo screen.

Once the welcome screen appears logon as the Administrator.

Now click on Start and then Run and in the open box (without quotes) type "control userpasswords2" and press "Enter"

Highlight the User Account that you log on with and click "Reset Password"

Type the new password in and again to confirm and then click on Ok twice.

Restart your computer and let it boot back to normal mode. You should then be able to login with the password that you reset.

There is the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor which is a bootdisk and will allow you to reset the password on any NT based system without knowing any user information.

Just a couple of notes about this
  • When asked what you would like to set the password to, enter an asterisk and not a string of text, the new password will be blank, I'm not sure if this is a bug but if you enter a string of text it will not work and you will not be able to log in.
  • Obviously people will notice you did this when they can't login so only do it where you have permission (end of generic disclaimer)
