I have been using gmail for a few years now. Currently I have 2 friends that every time they forward attachments to me, they come in the form of RFC-822 data files. I cannot open these, but their other recipients do not have any trouble opening the attachments. They do not appear as RFC-822 data files to the other recipients. Is there a setting on gmail I am messing up? or is there another fix?

    Windows XP

Hi there and welcome to PCHF

As you can't change the format of the attachments that others send you, in this case you can actually read them by saving them to your desktop, and renaming them to filename.rtf (Rich Text Format). From there you should be able to open them in Wordpad.
