I recently had a problem that eventually caused me to have to reinstall Win XP. I have a partitioned drive, with my System files on C and personal documents on D.

I cleared off C, and reinstalled XP.

However, now when I reboot the PC, chkdsk runs and it says "recovering orphaned file xxx to directory xxxx"

I stopped it and looked in my D drive, and files that were listed in the above statement were missing. The ones lost are not important, but if it continued it would have gotten ones I don't want to lose.

What is this, how can I stop it from erasing stuff in my D drive, and what should I do?

Never had this problem before when I had to reinstall XP.

I installed XP and did updates of drivers when this started happening.

It doesnt actual delete them they are in the files and dir that it recovers but under another name. Stopping check disk wont help if the files are broke all check disk is doing is finding them there still broke if you dont run it.

Copy off any files you need which may error if they are broke then let the check disk run. It doesnt mean the disk is on its way out(but it could be if it finds bad sectors) it means the disk is mixed up and doesnt know what files are were which could be from powering off during a write operation

I doubt anything is wrong with the HD mechanically. I replaced it with a brand new one less than 2 years ago.

I've backed up most of my files, but none of my programs yet. After chkdsk is complete, should i try to locate and rename the files (if so, how?) or should I find them (how?) and delete them and just copy over all my backed up files?

Basically, will the renamed files from doing chkdsk be able to be used by me once again afterward, if so how do I do that?

    Thanks!!!:D

If there small files like pics they may be ok but often they will be several parts. Generally they arent recoverable with out a lot of agro

so back up everything like It will all be gone afterwards.

Do you think it would be a good idea to reformat the entire drive and just start from scratch completely? Or is that an overkill?
