In my Internet Explorer browser I get a pop up ad when I go to a Weather page. Excite.com is my home page. I have Windows 7.

Hi jocaan, Welcome to PCHF! :)

Does this popup happen when you only visit a particular website or are you getting random popups whenever you browse the Internet? What version of Internet Explorer do you have installed?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions, thanks.

OK, I entered my system details. I have Version 11.0.9600.16476 of IE. I also get pop ups on my home page, one saying "Please install Media Player HD to continue (required). There also is a pop up from ebay, it looks like, it covers my Weather Zip Code box on my home page.

There might be more of an issue going on here and installing Adblocker may only put a band-aid on the problem please await a response from Evan on this issue. :D

You've probably installed software which comes with something else. Lets see what Evan can diagnose with this.

Thanks for entering your system specs. Lets try starting IE with no add-ons and see if the pop-ups still come up.

Click Start< in the Start search box type iexplore -extoff and hit enter. When IE opens with no add-ons loaded go ahead and navigate to your home page and see if the pop-up still occur. I want to also make sure your Internet Explorer settings are set up properly. In IE click Tools< Internet Options. At the top under home page make sure your home page is set up properly so that you aren't getting directed to some other bogus website. Then click on the Security tab and make sure the Internet and Restricted sites zones are set to their default levels.

Once completed click on the Privacy tab and make sure the turn on pop-up blocker is checked and click on the settings button next to the checkbox. Set the blocking level to medium and click on Ok.

The last thing we need to check is to make sure the Smart Screen filter in enabled. In the Internet Options window click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down towards the bottom and under the security heading click the checkbox to enable the smart screen filter. Then click on Ok to save the changes. Restart Internet Explorer and see if the pop-up still occur.

If they still come up then we might be dealing with some adware that could have gotten installed on the machine. Also try another Internet browser as well. That won't hurt to test the issue with.

OK I went through all the above steps. Before restarting there are no pop ups on the home page (Excite.com) or when I go to the Weather page. It looks great-there are no problems, pop ups or audios. However when I restart IE the pop ups come back on. Especially on the weather page I get two vertical rectangular pop ups, one on either side of the page asking me to update Media Player. Also an ad also covers up my Weather zip code box on my home page-I can see through the ad, it is clear and I can enter my zip code despite the ad. When I restart I also get a message at the bottom of the page saying Protected Mode is turned off for the Internet and Restricted site zones. If I click Turn On Protected Mode not only did the ad immediately appear but an audio ad also started. Also once I restart IE and click on the weather zip code box to enter my zip code a white screen appears and I have to first click off the white screen before I can go to the Weather Page.
Both Google Chrome and Firefox work fine. There are no pop ups.
There is another thing. If I go to my bank's website to pay my bills I cannot get into my Bill Pay web page with IE. I have to use Chrome or Firefox. But this may be another matter dealt with separately.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click on Clean.
    • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
    • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
    • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt as well.

    ====================

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes.org
    Alternate link: Download Mirror

(Note: if you already have the program installed, just follow the directions. No need to re-download or re-install!)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

(Note: if you already have the program installed, open Malwarebytes from the Start Menu or Desktop shortcut, click the Update tab, and click Check for Updates, before doing the scan as instructed below!)
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If you are prompted to restart, please allow it to restart your computer. Failure to do this, will cause the infection to still be active on the computer.

The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    The log can also be found at C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Here is the Wireless Test. I need further guidance to run Windows Repair if necessary. I ran Internet Reset and MTU test but did not follow how they turned out. For OTL there is a Clean Up button. Should I click on this button?
