I've had this happen more, but this time there seems no way fixing it so far.
My hard drive occasionally starts buzzing, first very soft and then it just keeps going louder and louder in a period of an hour or so, sometimes in a few minutes though.

It mostly happened when transfering many files when doing e.g. backups.
This time i was pasting some files in the public folder through the network. Suddenly i lost connection and went looking what happened with the PC... and it was buzzing again with a BSoD with the 0x0000F4 code.
Other times rebooting helped, sometimes not.
Most of the times i got the following bootup problem:

Port00: port reset error!! (or something close to that)

and most of the times i could "fix" this by putting the windows xp or vista CD in and suddenly the hard drive got recognized in the next boot (YES, without even booting from the CD, just letting it spin in there...)

This time it didn't work. So i tried some times to get into the windows vista CD menu, but it really takes about 2 hours to get in there. Then i tried the boot recovery (or something like that) and rebooted automatically.
And the drive got recognized again

So i booted into my xp partition (i need a file on the desktop there for school) and it doesn't load anymore from the "loading personal preferences" screen :(

But the strangest thing is that it starts working when putting in those CDs most of the times, any clue why?

Also some tips without getting the PC to a store or something, i really need that file without the danger of them deleting that important file...

If it boot when you put in a cd then this gives the drive time to spin up to speed. There is often an option in the bios to wait x seconds on boot up try changing that. The bios can be very fast and some drives dont respond in time so the delay can just give it the time to spin

It's a Medion PC (quite unknown) with 500GB internal drive and an external 1TB drive connected with SATA (it's a dock like on an xbox 360 on top)

Today i managed to boot from that external hard drive with lots of patience and the other drive also kept on working as long as i didn't try to boot from it :)

Will try to set the BIOS to wait longer.

It seems like the drive is on it's way out, especially if it's really noisy.

Download and run ASTRA32 from the link below. Download the standalone not the exe if you've been having problems. You can also unzip it to usb key and then run it on the problem pc.

ASTRA32 - Advanced System Information Tool - Free Download

Once you've run it click on Diagnostics on the left, then HDD Diagnostics.

If it shows the drive as poor or bad it's about to die and you need replace it. The longer the drive runs the worse it will get so avoid the running the pc until you can backup your data if this is the case.

A BSOD could be a hd fault. What make is the hd and how old is it? Most drives have a12 month warranty but some have a couple of years.

Check the makers website to see if they have any diags as these will be specifically for the drive and give a better results

Having other programs open can cause this problem but I think yours are caused by your hard drive being about to die.

Download ASTRA DOS boot disc from the link on another pc. Download the ASTRA Bootable ISO file.

ASTRA - Advanced Sysinfo Tool - Free Download

To burn the file to a disc download ImgBurn from the link below and select write image file to disc.

    The Official ImgBurn Website

Make sure the problem pc has CD set as the first boot device.

After ASTRA has loaded do the following:
    Press ALT+I
    Scroll down to Storage (ATA/ATAPI)
    Press Enter
    Scroll to your hard drive
    Press Enter
You will see Hard Drive Health

If the drive says Poor or Bad it's about to die. If it comes as good then please attach some minidumps for me to look at if you have any. They will be located in c:\windows\minidumps

For some reason i noticed something close to this happened many times before... If i install an OS on a new partition or something, the drive works again, but wont boot anymore from that 1 partition the crash happened on.. :eek:Z

I'll still try that hard disk health thing :) thanks

    Yes I think you should.

Also if you have some minidumps in the minidumps folder as per my post above - please attach them. 0xf4 usually means the hard drive is failing.
ASTRA is the quickest way to test this. If the drive is failing the longer it's powered up the more damage that is done to it and the greater the risk of losing your data.

I recommend you run ASTRA asap to make sure it's not hard drive.

it didn't seem to recognize the drives or something, it just gave me an empty grey box which looked kind of glitchy to me. To test i also tried viewing the RAM etc and that worked perfectly...
The hard disks were mounted and working in the bios at the startup, so i don't have a clue.

And there is no minidump for that fatal BSoD, probably because the drive stopped working so it couldn't save it anymore.

How many physical hard drives do you have?

You mentioned partitions earlier. You mention Vista cd's - is your system dual boot? If so you should be able to access the file from within and copy it over to another partition or removable drive.

If you're getting an access denied message please post back and we can give instructions to get access to it.
