I bought this webcam on Amazon, which is supposed to use the windows generic USB webcam driver, but I seem to be missing that. Windows update didn't seem to help with it, either.

Anyone know where I can find just the generic driver? It's This thing.

    Thanks in advance.

On customer reviews Turkish all agreed that there was no driver software but all agreed that it worked ok.

Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: 5.0 Megapixel USB PC Webcam Camera for PC Laptop Notebook

Perhaps it was dead out of the box.

    Check this from Jon Norris.

    What's your operating system?

Windows identifies that it is a USB 2.0 camera. Amazon says I am supposed to use the windows generic driver, which I later discovered should be in XP SP 2. Well, I have that and apparently the driver is still missing.

    Do you have XP SP3?

No, and I have had problems with SP3 before, leading to a reinstall.

Also, the little paper that came with it included a website with drivers. Webcams | HottestDealsEver.

The file for the A11 camera installed perfectly fine, however this did not work. The other one available there (for the A32, A34, A35) refuses to install because it says I do not have the capture device connected.

Sorry to ask as an aside but what was the problem with SP3?

Hardware was no longer recognized, windows claimed it now had a "better" driver to use that it came with (leading to things not working properly). My sound went funny (at the time I was using my on-board sound card). My Graphics card required some fiddling. All in all it became more trouble than it was worth to upgrade.

Of course, I now have different hardware (aside from the mainboard and the CD/R drive), but I am still convinced that it is designed specifically just to cause me grief.

Is this a hand built machine or branded like Dell etc?

It was a custom build through gateway, but so much of the hardware had been changed since I got it... I guess it's a Frankenmachine, more than anything.

I think all of the driver information is included separately on the CD, and I know someone who has an SP3 CD, so I might be able to get just the driver from it.

Or I could grow up and just upgrade, although I'd prefer not to mess with my OS. My computer is (metaphorically) held together with duct tape.

To be honest Turkish I feel a lot of your issues stem from this old machine and lack of MS updates and service packs etc.

I think I'll just bite the bullet and update.

I intend to restart as soon as a (lengthy!) file decompression is done.

Everything was upgraded and working fine yesterday.

I discovered that my laptop has SP2 but my desktop did not.

However, later that day (due to me not paying attention) I got a trojan.

Of course I have proper anti-virus stuff. I just allowed something that I shouldn't have. ("Why is it telling me this file has a trojan in bold red letters? I wonder what on earth that could mean..." *allows file*)

I think I have it all settled now, but if atapi.sys gets infected again on reboot I might be back here again.

I'm just going to blame the windows updater, even though it was my fault. I claim black magic and supernatural forces! ^-^

Anyway it's working now, thank you kindly, and thank everyone else here. (I swear, as soon as I have extra money I'm donating-- so stay around until 2030 for me.)

Well that's good to hear Turkish and if you still think you may be infected then let us know.

By the way we will still be open for business at 8:30am/pm no problem lol.

    Marked as fixed.
