One day after starting up my Dell laptop (Win XP Media Edition SP2 in French - I am translating the Windows terminology here from French to English) there was no sound anymore. The volume icon had disappeared from the system tray. When opening the volume control through the Control Panel, I could not move the slider. The window 'Properties of sound and audio devices ' says: No audio device. The field Volume of Device is grayed out. Anything on the tab Volume is grayed out. On the tab Hardware I see: Crystal WDM Audio Codec, Codecs audio, audio drivers, MCI devices. According to the window, they are all working properly. When I go to System in the Control Panel and then tab Hardware and then Device Manager the only thing that has a yellow question mark is Modem PCI. If I go to System devices and open System Loudspeaker then there is a message that no driver is installed. When I open the audio controllers then it is stated that everything is working fine. I already searched a lot and found some answers. One was to download the drivers at Dell. I actually did this and installed them but this did not help. I hope somebody can help me with this problem.
