One day after starting up my Dell laptop (Win XP Media Edition SP2 in French - I am translating the Windows terminology here from French to English) there was no sound anymore. The volume icon had disappeared from the system tray. When opening the volume control through the Control Panel, I could not move the slider. The window 'Properties of sound and audio devices ' says: No audio device. The field Volume of Device is grayed out. Anything on the tab Volume is grayed out. On the tab Hardware I see: Crystal WDM Audio Codec, Codecs audio, audio drivers, MCI devices. According to the window, they are all working properly. When I go to System in the Control Panel and then tab Hardware and then Device Manager the only thing that has a yellow question mark is Modem PCI. If I go to System devices and open System Loudspeaker then there is a message that no driver is installed. When I open the audio controllers then it is stated that everything is working fine.
I already searched a lot and found some answers. One was to download the drivers at Dell. I actually did this and installed them but this did not help.
I hope somebody can help me with this problem.

    Tag no. is 6MHQJ11

    You may speak English.
I entered dxdialog in Start>Run. It said it can't find dxdialog.

It says: do you want to autorise dxdiag to verify if these drivers are digitally signed by control laboratories for hardware for ms? this might use your internet connection for downloading new WHQL certificats. We advise you to say Yes. (short quick translation from French) Regards, akkefall

Yes. I downloaded and Crystal driver. I forget what I did next.

Also, I need to tell you that the battery in my laptop is completely dead. And we have a lot of power downs here. When my laptop restarts after a powerdown, it is the BIOS telling me No date set. I press F1, then the date is on 2000. I always reset it manually. Sometimes I forget and then thing like AVG and Eudora get all messed up.

I wait for your answer what to do next. Thanks so far.

Well with the state of the electricity situation in the area you are in I am not surprised that the cmos battery is dead.

You need to get the battery replaced as soon as possible Akkefall because you will always get that message that you see until you do.

If you can get the file download then click on the "Setup" file in the download and run it from there.

Thanks for that. Shall try to find a CMOS battery - that may be difficult. I did click on the .exe file that I downloaded and it installed SoundFusion. I rebooted and after reboot, no sound during Windows startup nor from Youtube. I tried headphone, no sound. Regards, Akkefall
