Hi, my boyfriend was cleaning up my laptop before and he deleted the ntuser.dat file that was in the 'videos' folder. I'm 95% sure that it was a very important file, is there any way I can get it back? how will it affect my laptop? I'm currently running Recuva to see if I can find it that way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks :)

    Hello there.

Click Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore and choose a date to just before he deleted the file.

That's a bit extreme, you could just try recuva (it recovers lost files (yes, it IS possible, it's a long story)) its a free file recovery system, you can download.. Download Recuva 1.37.488 - FileHippo.com but yeah... I can't tell you how many times file recovery software has saved my bacon.. Hope this helps or gives you future reference :)

Edit: I posted basically the same thing twice... Internet connection on the blink... as in, I'm going to smash my blinkin' router to small pieces with the traditionally large anvil if it keeps it up.....

I did a system restore, taking it back to this morning but the file is still missing. Thanks anyway :)

Thanks :) It is a brilliant program but unfortunately it didn't work on this file.

Also I might have another problem now...
After I'd finished the system restore windows defender was turned off. I turned it back on and then checked Windows Security Center and it is no longer labelling McAfee Security Center as McAfee it just has a long string of numbers and letters: 4lKysujt9 + xe5evoqufrqvhv. I don't know if this is a new problem or I just haven't noticed it before. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks :)

The ntuser.dat file is for storing info for user profiles.

So if you've deleted it, either just role back to before this happened or i think your only other option would be to create a new profile and delete your current one.

Opps - your last post wasn't there when i loaded the page, nevermind!

I was actually wondering why ntuser.dat was actually in the videos folder, but I wasn't going to say anything :D

As for your mcAfee problem, I've not used it in years, and don't ever plan on using it, no offense, but it's terrible. I think another guy would be more suitable for this type of question... try disabling windows defender or reinstalling mcAfee... I would help more, but I'm seriously tired

If the file was in a video directory a system restore wont bring it back as it only recovers system files in system directories. If it was in that directory chances are it was a backup. Unless you have 2 or more users you can delete the .dat file from the current user as its locked as its in use

The file ntuser.dat is found in various locations in C:\Documents and Settings folders.

Here's where they are in mine...

You use McAfee to protect your computer, it is a good software and 4lKysujt9 + xe5evoqufrqvhv may be some suspect virus

In order to avoid lost important data or file, you'd better do good back up of your computer.

    Possible Virus?

Hi, I mentioned this in another thread but this is more of a security issue so I thought I'd open a new thread. Hope that's ok :)

I did a system restore on my laptop on Tuesday night to recover a lost file and when I restarted Windows Defender was turned off. I turned it back on and then checked Windows Security Center and it is no longer labelling McAfee Security Center as McAfee it just has a long string of numbers and letters: 4lKysujt9 + xe5evoqufrqvhv. I don't know if this is a new problem or I just haven't noticed it before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

    Hi anna85,

I have merged your threads, creating double post only makes it more difficult for us to pinpoint your problem.

If you could follow the Prework link in my signature and post the logs that is asks for. Once you do that then someone from our Security staff will take a look.

    Thanks,
    Pupuplader
