I just formatted my hdd, and I'm looking to use a new AV. I've used AVG 2012 on my system before with no hassles. Which should I go for if I decide not to stick with it (or upgrade to AVG 2013)? Avira or Avast? Only thing is that it is an old system and I've read that Avast is quite hungry.

    ATI Radeon HD 3800
    1 GB RAM ddr 2 667

My vote is Avast or MSE also. I have used both and some systems have trouble with Avast so I put MSE on them instead.

Okay. What makes Avast the better option? Is it because (so I've heard) Avira picks up quite a lot of false positives? Avast, so it has been suggested, plays well with Zonealarm firewall too, although hard to say as it differs from system to system probably.

Speaking of which, Avast and MBAM... is okay?

Avast and MBAM will play nicely together

At the end of the day you should use something that you find easy to use and will actually use your machine to scan. If an application is tough to use and confusing it's of no use to the end user

Also Avast and MBAM are actually two different type programs. Avast is a real time av where MBAM is a cleaner of sort. It doesn't stop the infection but is used more for cleaning it off once it is in your system.

Well, after reading that, it seems as though Avast is better than Avira after all, and ahead of AVG too. Won't be using MSE...

If Avast is too hungry, I'll probably just go back to AVG. Better the devil you know, and all.

Before you discard MSE, here's a different opinion. Just remember there isn't any AV program that gives you 100% protection. You might consider using WOT and use good safe surfing sense. I also believe you need a program like MBAM running in real time.;)

If you're shooting for free, then definitely Avast! and MBAM.

Not MS Security Essentials. Since I have been using Security Essentials it has let at least 5 virus/malware programs through including the Redirect/Yellow Moxie virus and most recently FBI Ransomeware (virus? Malware?) I have been able to remove all except the Redirect/Yellow Moxie virus which nothing can seem to find, much less remove. I am uninstalling Security Essentials.
