Microsoft is at it again. First, they forced many mobile device OEMs to pay a fee for every Android device shipped. Now they want to put the stranglehold on manufacturers wishing to use ARM with Windows 8. In their infinite wisdom, Microsoft has decided that customers who purchase a Windows 8 devices with ARM architecture must not be able to load any other operating system other than what shipped with it.

They're planning on doing the same with software locked preinstalled PC's. And from a business perspective they are right. You pay for device with Windows, not for the device alone.. This one is completely in their right.

People are always free to buy a device with no stranglehold thingy.

From a business perspective, they will fail, and fail badly.

If I buy a device, I get the right to say what I run on it, I legally own that device regardless of what MS or other people say. It's the whole anti-competitive issue here. I'm not saying they shouldn't use secure boot, but I know it's only gonna result in pushing customers away.

Me and alot of other people who like to flash new roms will stay away from ARM devices.

Even though "secure boot" might not have security as the focus, it has good sides too, although relative unnecessary.

Yes you do have the right to decide what to run on it, on top of the operating system.

If you *might not* want Windows, then you purchase systems like what Dell calls FreeDOS. No Microsoft to hassle with....

Using this search, a FreeDOS system is about 380 LESS than a Home Premium - identical hardware.

how the devil much does Home Premium cost?
