Personally, I like AVG Free's resident shield. It's caught basically everything. I have yet to be infected in 4 years. But, Ad-Aware Plus's shield will catch a good majority of the nasties.
In terms of scanning, in addition to Anti Virus, Ad-aware and Malwarebytes will get all the junk

We are currently on Malwarebytes 1.40 so, at the end of the install be sure the Update Malwarebytes Anti Malware box is checked
