Default Antivirus XP big problem

I recently had a big infection on my pc from the program vista antivirus, which i was trying to use to get rid of other viruses and then discovered it was one. It invited all kinds of other spyware programs to join the party like antivirus xp, downloader, numerous trojans etc. It was doing something where after five minutes of my pc startup it would cut to the blue screen saying something like dumping memory cache (it went away to quick to read) then restarted my pc. I finaly got it to run long enough to download xoftspyse, and subscribe. Then i started up in safe mode, ran xoft and killed everything.

Now when i start my pc it works fine but antivirus xp is still hiding somewhere. I run xoft scans regularly, i searched both my drives for anything with the name antivirus and deleted all. Deleted some sketchy named icons in my mycomputer/c folder. My pc is not experincing many problems but antivirus xp is still reinstating itself onto my desktop and start menu every time i restart my pc, and i cant rest safely with it doing that.

My basic tfour questions are these

1. Is XoftSpySE a reliable antispyware program.
2. Is it possible that i have a hardware issue?
3. is antivirus xp small enough to overlook (i highly doubt so)
4. how can i tell if antivirus xp is gone for good?

I need real advice please, i dont want to be picky but PLEASE dont fool me into getting more spyware. also i apologize for a long post.
