Question Running More than one program

Recently I ran into a spy-ware problem. I contacted my ISP as I am using their software. I was told by the technician there not to run more than one spy-ware program. I told him that when using a second program it found more spy-ware on my system and he seemed shocked. What I would like some feedback on is, can you use more than one spy-ware program and if so what are other people using?
thanks

Running only one Spyware program at a given time is a good idea.
The same applies to Antivirus programs.

I use Spybot from The home of Spybot-S&D!. It's also free.

Question Re: Running More than one program

I have been told that running more than one anti-virus program can cause problems, but I have also been told and read in several magazines that you should run more than one spy-ware program and it will NOT cause any problems on your system. When I ran three different ones each one came up with additional spy-ware that the other had missed. So am I confused--YES

As I understand it, it's all about the "active" elements of the software. Sure, with AV, you should only run one application as all AV products run actively in the background. With Anti-Spyware products it can be different. Some have active "ingredients" - such as the excellent SpyBot (tea-timer) as suggested by Gandalf above...although many can be set to merely scan your PC, either manually or automatically. In the case of a manually scanning program, it is safe to have as many as you like installed on the PC at any one time. If it makes you feel safer to have more than one AS program installed then should have no problem with that.

Question Re: Running More than one program

Thanks for all the help. right now i am running the software supplied by my ISP and a program called Spyware Terminator. I have heard and read recently that Spybot is not such a great program. what is the feeling here to have it as an "extra" something to help eliminate spyware?
