Cannot open msconfig.exe
Hi,
I think I have been hit with some kind of virus/worm. I have multiple machines running Windows XP Professional SP2. I cannot access msconfig.exe on any machines. Some machines are running on different networks (physically at different locations and not linked in any way).
When I type msconfig (or msconfig.exe) in the run dialog or try to run it directly from the folder where it is located (C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries) I get an error:
Windows cannot find 'msconfig'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
I do transfer files on a USB drive between these computers and I suspect this is how all the machines got infected. I run AVG anti-virus, Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-aware. AVG and Ad-aware haven't picked up anything obvious, but Spybot always pick up something called Hupigon13 which shows up entries in the registry, something to do with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\msconfig.exe
I have fixed the "Hupigon13" problem in Spybot but it always appears the next time I run a scan.
If anyone can help me out with this or know how to fix the problem I will greatly appreciate it. Thanks you advance.
Jay
