Unfortunately, the "Windows genuine notification tool" that comes automatically as an upgrade is flawed. It reports "false positives" and Microsoft knows this. Many "corporate editions" pre-installed by Dell, Gateway, Compact, etc are coming up as "counterfeit".

You need to call the 800 number given by Microsoft and have your Serial number (Found on the outside of your case) ready. They will walk you through a manual activation. All this does depend on you having a "Legitimate" copy on your computer. Not one installed by a friend, etc.

Manuall removal of newdotnet can be very tricky, and is pretty much impossible for the average pc user I'm afraid.

But when searching the forums didn't you come across this bit?

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall NewdotNet. If you don't have that option or if you have difficulties then please follow the instructions on this site
Just uninstalling from add/remove programs, or downloading and running the installer get rid of all the files and entrys normally without problems.

To have a look if anything is left, and/or that there are other malware problems please post a log from Hijackthis. See link below in my sig.
