Default [Answered] KB828741 Windows Update, and "comsvcs.dll"

I just reformatted my PC with XP Home Edition (SP1) and the first thing I did was rush to get the Windows updates, but it seems like I was already too late! The KB828741 update continually failed during install with no explanation why. So I did some research..

Perhaps someone can help me understand what these pages describe (one the Microsoft security bulletin regarding the fix, the other about the nature of the problem it fixed...) I'm wondering, am I already infected in some way?

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-012.mspx

http://oval.mitre.org/oval/definitio.../oval1066.html

So, I downloaded the fix setup from microsoft and went into Safe Mode, ran CWShredder.exe (I already had the CWS.MSconfig one, which got removed) but the KB828741 setup fails because 'Setup cannot copy the file comsvcs.dll" and it wants to use the directory

C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

So I searched for this file, it is in C:\Windows\System32 as well as C:\Windows\LastGood\System32, and I tried to point the setup program to both of these, but it still fails to copy the file (for backing up purposes).

As the OVAL article points out (the latter of the two I linked), the comsvcs.dll is INVOLVED with the problem that the KB828741 patch is for. And my version number does seem to make it susceptible.

Can anyone tell me what to do at this point? I am stumped!!!

Thanks

[grr, already the same problem with SP2 installation....]

Sounds indeed like you are already infected with something , you dont have an AV or firewall running by the sound of it?

My advice would be to just reinstall windows since it is a fresh install anyway , and then install an AV and firewall before ever connecting to the net. And then after connecting to the net the first thing to do would be to fully update windows.

But you could also run this tool to fix the dcom prob:

http://www.grc.com/freeware/dcom.htm

And then following the instructions in the "Prework" link below in my sig and posting the resulting log files to see what needs to be done to get rid of the malware on there , but it would be faster to just start over i think.

Thanks for the advice, the forum was down when I tried to reply here earlier, I did actually try to re-install Windows, but sadly I believe my hard drive is dead. It had been giving weird errors before but this time windows detected it.

I think with all the things wrong with it now, we're just getting a new PC.

Thanks for the help!

No prob. But if the pc isn't that old yet it might be worth to try and replace the HD.

But a new pc usually fixes most problems aswell , and its always nice to get something newer and faster.
