Default AdAware first system scan ..

.. and possible 'hang' problem?

I've been reading up on some tuts on here and other related topics pertaining to security and PC immunization.
I downloaded and installed Ad Aware SE Personal and ran the first system scan (not in Safe-Mode, mind you)
The scan seems to hang at HSCXPSP1.cab (I don't have Win XP Service Pack 1 installed) .. any idea what may be causing this?

Welcome to PCHF , Reznorsoft.

Seems to be a legit windows file , have you let it run for a while to see if it really hangs?

PS, you dont have to have sp1 installed to have this on youre pc , it can also be downloaded separete as a patch for? the "MS02-060: Flaw in Windows XP Help and Support Center Could Enable File Deletion".

That's probably how I came to have it

I let it run for a good 10 minutes (perhpas more) before cancelling the scan.
I scanned again (not a 'Deep Scan', mind you) and removed the threats that were detected.

Lastly, I initiated another 'Deep Scan' and, once again, it's hanging on the same file.
I'm leaving it for now to see if it will eventually progress beyond this point.

:-) Hey reznorsoft,

A welcome from me as well. Try running ewido first. Some malware will mess with your anti-spyware.

Look forward to your reply,

OK .. I will try that. Have to install first.

Here's a list of what I've done so far ..
  • ran virus scan w/ AVG Free (no infections)
  • installed and ran Spybot S&D (no problems, but ~ 7,100 threats immunized)
  • installed and ran Ad-Aware (I've posted the results of that in my original message)

Default Re: AdAware first system scan ..

OK .. following a full night's rest I ran a series of scans on my comp (as per this tutorial Instructions for Checking your Computer for Malware)

Save for CCleaner, all other scans were done in Safe Mode
  • ran CCleaner and fixed all found problems
  • ran a complete scan w/ ewido
  • scanned using Spybot S&D (no threats/problems found)
  • ran full scan w/ Ad-Aware and encountered the same problem as yesterday --
the scan would hang on C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\HSCXPSP1.cab
so, instead, after cancelling the scan (I waited 10 mins to see if the scan would ultimately resume .. it didn't) I did a Custom Scan and unchecked the dllcache folder (I'm attaching the scan log .. see below)

I skipped the HijackThis step from that tutorial.
So, I'm back to my original question .. how come Ad-Aware hangs on HSCXPSP1.can .. what is it about that file?

Note: I can't attach the full ewido scan log because the file is larger than the max attachment size being allowed. Instead, I'm only attaching a part of the log, the part containing the threats found that were deemed High Risk. The other threats found were just Mozilla cookies that were deemed as Mild threats, they were all found in C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\

You could upload HSCXPSP1.cab to this site:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

but im 99.9% sure the file is ok , Are you using the latest version of ad-aware? And fully updated?
