Default Fake Anti-Spyware Programs - stay clear of them!

Yup, they exist !!

Always check this site before downloading/buying any anti spyware applications. This site has a fairly up-to-date list of the programs to avoid if you're looking to relieve your PC of the spyware burden. They are not recommended because they install spyware themselves, just aren't any good at fixing spyware, gives numerous false positives, or somewhere in between.

Default Fake Anti-Spyware Programs

hI THERE...THANKS FOR THE INFO ABOVE...I'M A LITTLE NEW TO THE WHOLE FORUM THING...

I'VE RETURNED FROM HOLIDAY TO FIND MY YOUNGER BROTHER HAS DOWNLOADED SPYKILLER, HE HAS ALSO TRIED REMOVING IT WITHOUT LUCK....IT SEEMS THERE ARE OTHER COMPONENTS THAT HAVE AFFECTED INTERNET EXPLORER, I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE SETTINGS I.E. HOMEPAGE. BUTTONS ETC

EVERYTIME I.E OPENS I GET A POP-UP ABOUT SPYWARE BEING DETECTED ON MY SYSTEM...BY LOOKING AT A FEW FORUMS I HAVE FOLLOWED SOME INSTRUCTIONS AND DOWNLOADED SPYWAREBLASTER, SPYWARE GUARD AND SPYBOT, THEY FOUND A LOAD OF FILES WHICH HAVE BEEN REMOVED, BUT IT HAS MADE NO DIFFERENCE TO I.E.

LOOKING IN 'ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMMES' THERE ARE 3 NEW ENTRIES I CANNOT REMOVE, WHEN I CLICK REMOVEI GET THIS ERROR

'UNABLE TO OPEN ' HTTP://LOOKING-FOR.CC/UNINSTALL/HOME...SSISTANT.HTML"

WHY CAN'T I UNINSTALL THIS?? DO YOU THINK THIS IS THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM WITH INTERNET EXPLORER...

ANY SUGGESTIONS.........[/img]

Default Fake Anti-Spyware Programs

Hi Hayleigh and welcome to PC Help Forum.

First things first, do you have a Caps Lock button?? a bit "shouty" there....

Right, on to your issue. Please go to the sticky post here: http://www.pchelpforum.com/modules.p...iewtopic&t=130 - download Hijack This! and then run it. Copy the report that you get and paste it in here as a new post.

Don't do anything else with Hijack This until you have posted the report and I (and possibly others) have looked at it.

Also, don't download anything that has a popup that says "Your computer is at risk, download [So and so] now!" or banners that look like windows dialogue boxes, etc.

Here is a site dedicated to calling out all rogue anit-spyware programs. They keep it up to date and if someone gets their act together and stops misleading people the site shows that too. Very fair and really cool.
