Default humming sound why?

I get this humming sound from my computer it sounds like it is coming from the speakers but the funny thing is when I shut off the speakers it is still there!! it is not always there, seems like when a sound is going to be played, say mail note. it starts and lasts about 5-10 min.

Hi and welcome to PC Help Forum

Humming or buzzing...which better describes it?

Hi
Let's play Sherlock Holmes (or Mr. Spock if you like...):

Sound, requires a vibrating surface.

Moving parts in your system are the fans, and the spindles inside your HDD(s)

Are there any damaged surfaces on any fan?
Is a fan working harder occasionally (automatic heat control)
Any lose screws? (in the case I mean!!)
Check if the fans have come lose.

So if your speakers are turned off (power, not volume) the humming still comes from them? Can you try headphones or different speakers in the same PC slot?

Are the speaker jacks in all the way (all connecting speaker wires)?
