Hi
to PCHF I'd try a system restore to the day before you had the problem give this a shotThrough the All Programs menu: 1. Click Start. 2. Point to All Programs. 3. Point to Accessories. 4. Point to System Tools. 5. Click System Restore. 6. Follow the instructions on the wizard. Remember to select date before the issue!!

I wonder if it is as simple as the mute box ticked for the microphone in the sound control panel, a double click on the speaker icon on the bottom task bar brings up the control panel in XP, I think it is the same in Vista, but not a Vista owner so not sure. Conversely have you also tried disconnecting the microphone by its plug, then replacing it to make sure it is connected correctly.
