very quiet pc

hi ive had 2 small speakers plugged into my pc since i got it and they have always been very , very quiet (however much i fiddled with them). so i thought it was just the speakers. but today i got a set of powered speakers (including a sub woofer) and they are still so quiet you cant hear them unless you put them on full blast with your ear right next to them.
ive tried updating the drivers and yes ive turned all the volume controlls up. ive just ran out of ideas now.

hi what is your system board model ? just asking you are plugging them into the green port on the back of the computer arnt you ?

do you have a pci sound card or do you use the onboard sound ports(if it has them)?

hi yes im plugged into the green port on the back of the pc there is 4 other colours but i tried them and dont get any sound at all. Im not sure what my system board model is or how to find it or what a pci sound card is. (bit thick really...lol)

is there a name on your computer and a model number ?

could you try playing a music file with the volume up on the computer and the volume up on the speakers and whilst it is playing pull the plug out of the socket slowly and back in again , is there any change in sound ?

you say there are other colours what are they please ?
and is there any other sockets anywhere on the back of the computer that look the same size ? (top to bottom)

hi yea other colours are blue pink yellow and black with no other sockets on the back but there is 2 similar sockets on the front 1 for earphones and 1 for something else. Ive tried these too.
when i pulled the plug out while playing a track the sound did get a fraction louder while unplugging and reinserting. the pc is a dell xps dimension 400/9150.

setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system please ensure that your product is properly installed
