Default No Sound

I reinstalled Windows XP Home SP2, installed the additional drives provided on the motherboard manufacturer's website, updated to SP3, updated remaining drivers to Device Manager's satisfaction, and yet there is still no sound. I have no problems highlighted in Device Manager.

I receive the message 'There are no mixer devices available...' and there is 'No audio device' shown in Control Panel/Sound & Audio Devices Properties.

I have checked the BIOS to ensure 'AC97' is enabled and checked that Windows Audio in Services starts and is on automatic.

I have downloaded, run, deleted, reloaded, etc., more audio drivers than I can reasonably mention.

My desktop PC has a MSI 865GM3-LS motherboard (previously known as MSI MS-7037 Ver 1) and I am running on the onboard sound only.

Can somebody help?

p.s. My monitor's volume control is turned on!

I downloaded and ran Astra32 which reported that all devices were working normally.

Under System/Sound it reported:

Sound Chip Vendor: Intel Corp.
Sound Chip: 82801EB/ER(ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller.
AC'97/HDA Codec Name: Advance Logic ALC 655.
Codec Enhancement: 3D Stereo Enhancement.

I have sound.
For those unfortunate souls who do not: I confirmed the identity of the chipset using Astra32 (it was an Intel 865G) then I ran all available chipset downloads from the Intel website, thereby replacing those earlier, seamingly faulty downloads from MSI's site.
After hours of grief, I guess the moral of the tale is to go to to the OEM wherever possible (Intel, Realtek, etc.) for drivers and not wholly rely on the motherboard manufacturer.
How does one show this thread as fixed?
