could you right click on "my computer " select properties then on the generals tab look down to where it says computer , can you tell us what it says there please i.e. intel .....or amd ... 512mb ram etc etc

it looks like your sound could be a soundblaster pro ?? as this is a common type maker of sound one would expect that windows should be able to download the drivers from the net , could you try uninstalling the sound card (if you can) reboot your comp when it asks for the drivers or where to look direct it to search the net for the appropriate drivers and install automatically

im still looking to find a direct download for the drivers for xp but they seem to be a little elusive

one more info regarding this:
i followed this directory to update my sound drivers device manager-->sound, video and game controllers-->conexant high defenition audio (right clicked on it)....and selected update driver option.
when it finished checking for updates finally a window displayed saying that "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"

do this mean anything related to the problem??

actually i installed the driver by forced attempt..that means when i clicked on the driver software for installation it dispayed a message that the device is not found..so i opened the device manager right clicked on the other-->audio n selected update driver option. i followed these steps:
1)install from a list or specific location(advanced)
2)don't search i'll chose the driver to install
3)clicked on have disk option on the new window (i didn't check any other option other than this)
4)i browsed for .inf file from the folder that was created during automatic installation of the driver software
5)then it gave a warning something like this "this is not compatible but do you still want to install?"
6)i selected yes
7)the installation was succesfull (i.e there is no others tag in device manager n also the sound is comming from my laptop's built in speakers),
but still i cannot hear the sound from my external audio port.
