Thanks again, I will try this.
I have been sick this last few days, that is why I am late responding.

Still no joy.
I have downloaded this file from C-Media
C-MediaAC97DrvUD4044Logo_Win98seme2kxp

When I try to run setup it says:

Our audio chip provides multi-speaker surround and realistic sound effects.
Due to the fact that your computer is not equiped with our audio chip, you can not avail yourself of these advanced features.

What next?

Sounds like the onboard sound is gone.

I would look at getting either a new motherboard or a sound card.
