alright i'm returning the sound card... this ended with the famous by creative message error "setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audio card on your system" meaning something's funky, possibly dealing with bios or device manager.. probably more hassle than it's worth. i'm thinking xonar usb with digital 5.1 might be easier.

It's hard with older products that are no longer properly supported, especially if you don't get the proper cd's with them.

I will mark this resolved.
