Default Multimedia Audio Controller Issue

Hey everyone,

I've seen this problem a few times in different forums but haven't yet been able to find an exact solution for myself.

Problem is that I think I accidentally uninstalled my soundcard - to the extent that if I go to device manager, the 'Multimedia Audio Controller' shows up under unknown hardware with a yellow questionmark icon next to it.

Unfortunately, I've got no idea what it is I need to do, and in terms of drivers, I've got no idea which ones I need in order to fix it. There are some numbers on the back of the PC which I assume are the ID numbers for it or whatever, so I'll stick them up. However, I'm not sure if they're the numbers that would be necessary to find a solution. Here they are:

Model/Type: refFIC-GE-SIS661FX
S/N:100608700224
P/N: PB34240901
MS Model: S6100 ID004D

It's a Packard Bell machine, running Windows XP...erm, I'm not sure what other details are necessary, so I'll leave it at that for now. Any help you could give me would be much, much appreciated. Please help me get sound back on my PC!

Welcome to PCHF.

Open your Device Manager
Click on View ... Show hidden devices

Click on and Delete (with the Delete key) any devices that have a ? or ! in front of them.
If the Device Manager has an "Other" device category, open it and Delete any devices in the "Other" category.
Now, reboot.

The reboot will force Windows to refind the deleted devices and hopefully see them for what they are.
After rebooting, give Windows time to locate and properly install the deleted devices.

Go to the Device Manager and verify that all your devices are listed correctly.

I've done what you said - but it's just the same problem all over again. Windows says it's detected new hardware, which is the 'multimedia audio controller', but then the wizard comes up looking for installation software, and as far as I'm aware, I haven't got a disc for it. So I'm still lumbered. Thank you so far though, it's more than I've been able to do already!

I assume you have tried Windows Update?

Suggest you do this...

Click on this link...What's inside my PC?

After the Belarc scan is done, click on the IE Page at the top of your IE window then click on Save As...
You want to save the report in the .mht format.
Save the scan report to your desktop (that way it will be easier to find).

Now, attached the Belarc report to your next reply.

How do I attach a file? I'll tell you.

To attach file to a reply, look under the Message text window, you'll see a button that says Manage Attachments.
Click on the button. Now click on the browse button and browse to your desktop to select the previously saved file.

This information will help identify your computer system.
This information will also help me find a source for the driver you need.

Also, suggest you click on User CP.

Click on Edit Options.

Fill in the System Specs information.

The Belarc report will give you all the hardware and software information about your computer.

This way the next posting you submit for help you won't have to be bothered with providing this information again.

Hi again,

See attached the scan. I couldn't save it in the mht format, just in htm - it opened in firefox rather than IE, though I have both on my pc. I'll fill in that profile page you mentioned next chance I get, for now though I hope this helps? I think it's a firefox file though or something, I couldn't get it to open in IE Anything you can tell me from this would be fantastic - if not, I'll stick it in my profile as you said and hopefully it'll come up then. Sorry for the late reply btw.

Belarc did not detect a Multimedia device as I hoped it would.

Can you physically remove the sound card and tell me the make and model of the card?

Note: Please turn the PC off before you remove the card.
While the cards today are supposed to be removable with power on, let's not take the chance.
