Default Realtek HD audio driver install fails.

I have a new Biostar MB with REaltek HD audio onboard, but the driver installation fails with no indication why. Other drivers for the MB seem to have installed fine.

I built a new Windows XP to use with the new motherboard, and upgraded it to SP3, before installing most drivers, and new software.

I have tried a new download of the driver, but it also failed.

Device manager recognizes the audio device, but there is no driver, so it does not function. Sounds and Audio Devices on the control panel says there is no audio device.

My motherboard only has a couple of PCI expansion slots, so I was sure hoping to not have to use one for a sound board. Does anyone have any idea how I can to resolve this problem?

The Biostar motherboard is P4M900-M4 version 6X, which incorporates Realtek ACS861VD.

Default Re: Realtek HD audio driver install fails.

A few suggestions:

1. Download and install this program (it's free) CCleaner ... Alternative Download.
After installing...run the program...click on Analyzer...then click on Run Cleaner.
On the left side of the window, click on Registry...click on Scan for issues...click on Fix selected issues.

This program will cleanup your temp files and cookies.

2. Open your Device Manager.
Click on View ... Show hidden devices

Click on and Delete (with the Delete key) any devices that have a ? or ! in front of them.
If the Device Manager has an "Other" device category, open it and Delete any devices in the "Other" category.
Now, reboot.

The reboot will force Windows to refind the deleted devices and hopefully see them for what they are.
After rebooting, give Windows time to locate and properly install the deleted devices.

Recheck your Device Manager.

3. Where did you get the Realtek driver from?
"Realtek ACS861VD" does not show up on an internet search.
Please click on this link...What's inside my PC?
After the scan is done, click on the IE Page at the top of your IE window then click on Save As...
You want to save the report in the .mht format.
Save the scan report to your desktop (that way it will be easier to find).
Now, attach the Belarc report to your next reply.

When you reply, look under the Message text window, you'll see a button that says Manage Attachments.
Click on the button.
Attach the files that your saved to your desktop.

Thanks for the time you put into your reply. I really appreciate it.

I did as you suggested, except I am not attaching the Belarc Adviser output, which contains more info on my system than I want to share, nor I think is needed.

Device Manager would not let me delete the Realtek audio device, saying it may be needed to boot. That is the only device marked.

The cleaner, which I hate to run, only found a few cookies, which I let it delete, although I'm not sure why. As I mentioned in my original post, this is a very clean system at the moment, although I have now added a couple of applications (CCleaner and Belarc Advisor) that were not here a few minutes ago.

After rebooting, I reran the driver installer I downloaded (I pretty sure I got this from Biostar in Taiwan). I then ran the one included with the motherboard. Neither one worked (probably because nothing had really changed).

Let me know if there is something on the Belarc Advisor report that might help you help me.

This is all it said about the audio device:

Multimedia
Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

This is, according to the documentation that came with the MB, an ALC861VD.

Thanks again for your time.

Default Re: Realtek HD audio driver install fails.

Further info:

I downloaded a new Realtek "generic" HD audio driver install package, ran it and got an installation error message 0XE0000227. InstallShield does not include the error code on their web page.

Biostar USA has a way to send them a message, but the say they may, or may not, answer it. So far, no answer.

I just ordered a cheap PCI audio card. Woe is me! :-)

I don't have a Microsoft USA bus driver installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. If you, or anyone else, has a reasonable suggestion, I will give it a try.

Default Re: Realtek HD audio driver install fails.

I had the same EXACT thing happen last year when I built this computer. It's Gigabyte motherboard also features Realtek HD audio. I tried all the "yellow question marks", stood on my head, held my mouth the right way, uninstalled this and installed that, rebooted a dozen times, etc. In desperation I just re-ran the CD that came with the board. Everything worked, and I haven't had one second of trouble (knock on wood) out of the board since. Don't ask me how or why because I don't know, but the music sounds great!!

I'm NOT suggesting you try the same thing or that it will work if you do so; just telling you my story.
