I tried running setup from the root directory of the CD, but it did not select the audio board as one of the devices it would try to install. I did not continue.

Thanks for your input.

As you don't have UAA listed and it should be, maybe try installing the Microsoft UAA drivers first. You need it to be able to install Realtek HD Audio correctly, after you have installed if the Realtek won't install then try disabling it.

Sorry to wait so long to reply.

I guess I don't know how to get the Microsoft UAA driver, The link you sent me to (http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/OTHER-SOUNDCARDS/Microsoft-UAA-Bus-Driver-for-High-Definition-Audio.shtml)) just game me the same old Realtek driver install that fails.

I tried some other locations, but the installs just "finish" with no message, and no evidence of anything being installed. I even tried an HP install, and it completed, leaving a .DLL in a folder, but nothing else.

I don't understand the relationship between the Realtek drivers and the Microsoft UAA driver. I am surprised Microsoft does not have a download, but I am unable to find one, at least for XP -32bit. I am surprised Biostar doesn't provide it with their mother board installation. Well, maybe not surprised with Biostar.

Thanks for your suggestion.

For detailed information regarding Microsoft UAA Driver please see the following Microsoft Link.

Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000

The reason you can't download it from Microsoft is because they didn't make it publicly available. If you wanted it you had to contact Microsoft to get it. It has however been included with XP SP3. See link of included Hotfixes.

List of fixes that are included in Windows XP Service Pack 3

If you have SP3 and it still isn't installing you may want to download the full version of SP3 and install that. As the Microsoft update version of SP3 in considerably smaller than the IT Professionals version, 888111 may not be included in that version. You can get the full SP3 download from this link.

Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

Please try downloading and installing the above version to see if that fixes you install problems. If it doesn't please post back.

It did NOT fix the problem.

Why would only IT Professionals and Developers need to install audio drivers? Why would anyone want to make it difficult?

I still don't understand the relationship between the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver, and the Realtek HD audio driver. How do I know if the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver is installed? I found hdaudbus.sys in Windows\system32\drivers which is version 1.0a (file version 5.10.1.5013). (I think it must have been installed about a week ago.) If that is supposed to allow the Realtek audio driver to install, it doesn't work.

Thanks for trying. Any other suggestions?

Idea I wonder if the UAA is a left over driver from the old board that got replaced if you boot the PC in safe mode has it got the UAA listed in the device manger?

Default Re: Realtek HD audio driver install fails.

I didn't say only IT Pro's would need to install the drivers, I merely suggested that if the driver didn't install with ordinary SP3 then to try the IT version. Why Microsoft chose not to release the driver publicly (which did make things difficult for a lot of people) until SP3 I have no idea.

As for hdaudbus.sys file - it is part of the Microsoft UAA driver which Madmatt suggested you disable from Device Manager in order to be able to install the Realtek drivers. You stated you did not have UAA to be able to disable it.

Not having UAA can also cause problems with installing realtek drivers, which is why I suggested that since you didn't have it - you may need to install it first.

According to Microsoft the purpose of the UAA driver is the following:
Improvements for users

•Easier installation of audio peripherals• Easier installation of audio drivers•Better system stability•Better performance•Glitch-free audio•Improved security of the content that you want to help protect• Fewer vendor-supplied drivers• Less need to upgrade drivers• Guaranteed basic audio support for UAA-compliant devices
Try disabling UAA as per Madmatts post - otherwise post back with the exact error message you receive when trying to install the Realtek drivers and we may be able to assist you better.
