Strange noises, intermitent sound. Hardware Failure?
Hi all, so here's what is wrong with my laptop:
A few weeks ago I was playing music through some external speakers when a loud high pitched beeping came on intermittently. At first it was just a short blast, but as the music kept playing the noise persisted. The noise continued to come from the laptop speakers once I unplugged the external ones.
The problem seemed to go away, but the next day I heard strange crackling noises through the speakers that got worse and worse. (like the sound when you are trying to talk into a radio with really bad reception: loud crackling, not just static.) After a restart the problem seemed to go away. It is more likely to show up the longer I have my computer on; it generally is not there on startup.
Finally, my sound gave out entirely. I downloaded new drivers to no avail. I went into the device manager and deleted my sound drivers (Realtek AC97). After a restart my computer detected the sound card and reinstalled the drivers - everything worked! For about a week.
Now the beeping/crackling is back and nothing in particular seems to make it start (I suppose playing music makes it show up, but I doubt its music per se, but rather just any sound coming thru the speakers)
Trying to reinstall the drivers did not fix it again, so I'm pretty stumped. Is this just the beginning of a total sound hardware failure? Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Matt
